Skills of the Nurses About the Administration of Subcutaneous Low Molecular Weight Heparin Injection

Objective: The research was carried out as descriptive, with the aim to determine the skills of nurses about the administration of subcutaneous low molecular weight heparin injection.

Materials and Methods: The research was conducted at a University Hospital in Ankara. The universe of the research is consisted of 72 nurses working in the Orthopaedics, Heart-Vascular Surgery and Internal Clinics of Hacettepe University Adult Hospital, and sampling included 30 nurses selected by stratified sampling method. Data in the research was gathered by the survey form developed to determine the background characteristics of the nurses and an observation form to observe the determination of the skills of nurses about subcutaneous low molecular weight heparin injection. Data obtained in the research is evaluated by using SPSS software.

Results: According to the results obtained in the research, it is identified that; more than half of the nurses didn't receive an inservice education on the subject, most nurses did not control the drug card and physicians order before starting the procedure, did not wash their hands before and after the procedure, could not select appropriate injection area; however administered the injection by controlling the existence of air lock and without making proper aspiration, but almost half of the nurses inserted the needle through wrong angle. In addition, they recorded insufficient data and did not assess the patient after the procedure.

Conclusion: In the research, it is concluded that nurses don't perform some critical steps of the subcutaneous injection of low molecular weight heparin skills in the intended level.
