Determination of the Educational Needs of the Nurses Working in Workplace Regarding their Tasks

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the educational needs of the nurses working in a workplace regarding their tasks.

Method: 158 nurses who work in the workplaces and public institutions that have 50 or more workers in Ankara province border constituted the sample of the study. The data were collected by applying a questionnaire which was including questions about socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge about occupational health nursing. Numbers, percentages and Pearson chi-square test were used in data evaluation.

Results: 92% of nurses are women, 8% is 49 years-old and over, 4% is graduate. 84% of the nurses do not have in-service training about occupational health and safety. It is determined that the nurses mostly keep records about clinic and medical services in workplaces and it is also determined that almost half of the nurses provide health education. Nurses who work in private work places, who are in young age group and who are at graduate education level have higher occupational health nursing knowledge scores and in-service training doesn't have an enormous effect on knowledge scores.

Conclusion: It can be said that experience, graduate degree and age have a positive effect in the occupational health nursing knowledge score. It is suggested that occupational health nursing certification programs must be organized by being grounded over graduate degree and must be provided by the experts of the area.
