Training and Practice Characteristics of Caregivers of Children Receiving Chemotherapy Treatment for Treatment-Related Complications

Aim: This cross-sectional research was conducted with the purpose of determining the training and practice characteristics of caregivers of children receiving chemotherapy treatment for treatment-related complications. Material and Methods: The caregiver of 200 children who received chemotherapy treatment constituted the sample of the study. The data were collected with a 67-question data form. For the analysis of the data; number, percentage and Chi-square tests were used. Results: 42.4% of caregivers stated that they wanted to receive training from a special education nurse. It was found that the differences between the time of training and the material used in oral care, note and report what children eat, using bath puff during the bath, using moisturizer after bath and keeping the bed/cradle locked were significant (p<0.05). There were also significant differences between the professional member who gives the training and the things done when returning to the hospital and blood is seen in urine/stool and using moisturizer after bath (p<0.05). The difference between the repetition of the training and the material used in oral care, the frequency of daily oral care, keeping the bed/cradle locked, using mask, cleaning vegetables/fruits, choosing toys, allowing brushing teeth, using bath puff, the things done when blood is seen in urine/stool and using moisturizer after bathing have been found to be significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Caregivers request the training to be given by a private nurse. The time of the training, the repetition of the training and the professional member who gives the training affect the effectiveness of the training.

Validity and Reliability of Turkish Version of the Symptom Status Questionnaire-Heart Failure

Aim: The aim of this study was to perform validity and reliability of Turkish version of the Symptom Status Questionnaire-Heart Failure. Material and Methods: This methodological study was conducted in patients with heart failure (n=70) followed in internal medicine and cardiology clinics of Hacettepe University Adult Hospital between June 1 and July 5, 2019. �Patient Information Form� and �The Symptom Status Questionnaire-Heart Failure� were used for data collection. The language, content and structure validity and the reliability stages were completed, respectively. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.15�9.97 years, and more than half of those (58.6%) were diagnosed with stage 3 heart failure. There was a high consistency between the expert views (CVR=1.00). The exploratory factor analysis showed that the scale included seven factors structure explaining 91.009% of the total variance, and the factor loadings ranged from 0.20 to 1.0. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, Chi-square/df was 1.551, non-normed fit index was 0.83, and comparative fit index was 0.83. The internal consistency of the Cronbach�s alpha was found to be 0.86. Conclusion: The questionnaire was found valid and reliable for the Turkish society and can be used to evaluate heart failure symptoms and their effects on patients in clinical trials.

Evaluation of the Relationship Between the Perception of Professionalism and Commitment to Professional Values in Nursing Students

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the perception of professionalism and commitment to professional values in nursing students. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 278 nursing students. The study data was collected using a data collection form, the Nurses Professional Values Scale - Revised (NPVS-R) and the Inventory of Professional Attitude at Occupation (IPAO). Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman�s correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: The median age of students was 20 (18-35). It was determined that the median of total IPAO score was increased when the students perceived nursing as a professional occupation, thought about practicing nursing after graduation, were fourth-year nursing students, and planned to make an academic career and become a member of professional organizations (p<0.05). Additionally, the median total NPVS-R and IPAO scores were found to be high among the respondents with a special interest in nursing and who were female (p<0.05). According to correlation analysis, a positive relationship was found between NPVS-R and IPAO total scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded from the study that nursing students who adopted professionalism are committed to professional values, and such a commitment was particularly apparent among the students with a special interest in the nursing profession.

Determination of Knowledge and Skill Levels of Nursing Students on Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Placement

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and skill levels of nursing students for peripheral intravenous catheter placement. Material and Methods: The study was conducted as descriptive. A total of 80 students, 20 students from each class, were assigned to the study. The data were collected in a laboratory between May and July 2019 using sociodemographic data form, knowledge form and skill checklist prepared by the researchers. The students demonstrated the skill on the arm model. Results: The mean knowledge score of the students was 37.48�3.45 and the mean score of skill was 33.09�4.17. It was determined that the mean knowledge score of the first-grade nursing students (39.60�2.87) was the highest while the mean skill score was highest in the fourth-grade nursing students (34.45�3.06). A positive, weak, statistically significant relationship was found between the mean knowledge and the mean skill scores (r=0.240, p<0.05). Conclusion: It was found that the students' knowledge and skill scores for peripheral intravenous catheter placement were above average. In order to increase the skill level for the procedure, it was recommended that the knowledge level of the students should be increased, the number of students performing the procedure in the presence of an educator or clinical nurse should be increased in clinical and laboratory practices and the laboratory practices for the skill should be repeated in the following classes.

Examining the Comfort Level of Hemodialysis Patients

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the comfort level of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 262 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment between October and December 2018. Data were collected using �Patient Identification Form� and �Hemodialysis Comfort Scale. The data obtained from the study were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 25 program with number, percentage, independent samples t test and one way ANOVA. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale used in the study was found to be 0.75. In the study, the significance level was accepted as p <0.05. Results: 59.5% of the patients were male, 30.5% were between the ages of 40-59 (x̄=60.7�14.48, min:18-max: 92), 37% were retired, 70.2% of them had a moderate income level. It was found that 77.5% of the patients received 3 sessions of dialysis treatment per week and 65.6% of them had arteriovenous fistula. The mean score of subscale �overcoming� was 16.01�4.81, the mean score of subscale �relief� was 9.16�3.70 and the total scale mean score was 25.18�7.03. Conclusion: The comfort level of hemodialysis patients was found to be moderate.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Emotional Labor and General Health Status of Intensive Care Nurses

Aim: This study was conducted to investigate general health, socio-demographic characteristics and some profession-related characteristics in intensive care nurses as a predictor of emotional labor. Material and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional and relational study. The study was carried out in two university hospitals located in the west and southeast of Turkey between July and December 2018. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 152 intensive care nurses working in intensive care units. Permissions for the study were obtained from the ethics committee and the university hospitals. Data were analysed with number, percentage, mean, correlation and regression analysis. Results: It was determined that the average age of intensive care nurses was 30.28�5.35, 68.4% were women, 53.3% loved their profession at a �moderate level� and the average number of patients who were responsible/cared for was 5.05 (� 2.95). When the in-depth behavior sub-dimension was examined in nurses, it was found that the state of liking the profession (Yes) (β=0.185, p<0.05) was a significant predictor. When the superficial behavior sub-dimension was examined, it was determined that the state of liking the profession (Yes) (β=0.298, p<0.001) and the perception of economic status (β=0.211, p<0.05) were significant predictors. Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that general state of health was not a significant predictor of emotional labor in intensive care nurses. It was found that as the nurses� level of liking the profession increased, �in-depth and superficial behavior�, which are the sub-dimensions of emotional labor, increased. Institution managers should provide support and create an appropriate clinical environment for nurses to manage the process of emotional labor better. In addition, it is recommended that necessary strategies be developed for nurses to love their professions.

Examining the Opinions of Nurses Working in a University Hospital About Hospital Disaster and Emergency Plans

Aim: The study aim was to examine the opinions of nurses working in a university hospital about Hospital Disaster and Emergency Plans. Material and Methods: This is a descriptive study. The universe of the research was the nurses working in a university hospital. The data were collected between April and July 2016 through a questionnaire consisting of 28 questions. 402 nurses participated in the study. In order to evaluate the variables that may be related to the participants' views on disaster and emergency plans, cross-tables were formed with the variables included in the questionnaire such as demographic, work history, disaster experience. Statistical significance was evaluated by chi-square test. Results: 70.0% of the participants stated that they attended a training on disaster and emergency. The majority of those (71%) who stated that they did not receive training were in the 21-30 age group. The majority of those (76%) who stated that they were not aware of the Hospital Disaster and Emergency Plans were also in the 21-30 age group. 60% of the nurses who stated that they were aware of Hospital Disaster and Emergency Drills had 6-10 years working experience in the profession. Conclusion: The majority of those who stated that they were not aware of Hospital Disaster and Emergency Plans were nurses who had few years working experience in the profession and the institution. It is recommended to give priority to nurses who have several years of experience in the profession and the institution, on issues such as trainings and awareness studies on Hospital Disaster and Emergency Plans, and inclusion in drills.

The Effect of the Motivational Interviewing on the Lifestyle, Body Mass Index, Blood Pressure, Self-Efficacy Perception and Medication Adherence of Hypertensive Individuals

Aim: This study aims to analyze the effect of motivational interviewing on the lifestyle, blood pressure, body mass index, self-efficacy perception, and medication adherence of hypertensive individuals. Material and Methods: This study was conducted with hypertensive individuals between the ages of 25 and 45 registered in seven Family Health Centers in Ak�ehir, Konya. Inclusion in the present study was voluntary, and 80 people who agreed to participate were randomized into two groups as experimental and control groups. However, the present study was completed with 75 participants. Both groups were administered the pre-test, then the experimental group was visited for a total of 5 times: four visits at three-week intervals and one visit after one month. In each visit, a 30 to 45 minute individual motivational interviewing was carried out. The study was completed by administering the last-test to both groups. The study was conducted between February 6 and June 24, 2014, and the data were analyzed using the SPSS 17.0 package. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the pre-test and last-test scores of the experimental group in terms of Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index, the Medication Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Conclusion: Motivational interviewing can be used in ensuring healthy nutrition and regulation of exercise level and blood pressure of hypertensive individuals, and in increasing their self-efficacy and treatment adherence.

The Effect of Using Respiratory Exercise Diary on Regular Spirometer Use in the Postoperative Period: A Randomized Controlled Study

Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of using respiratory exercise diary on regular spirometer use in the postoperative period. Material and Methods: The study was carried out in a randomized controlled design between May 2017 and October 2018 in a general surgery unit of a university hospital. The study sample consisted of 80 patients who underwent open abdominal surgery under general anesthesia (study group=44, control group=36). Data were collected using �individual identification form� and �respiratory exercise diary�. Patients in both groups were visited by the researcher in their room before surgery and informed about respiratory exercises with spirometer. The patients in the study group were asked to note their exercises on respiratory exercise diary for three days, and the patients in the control group on a blank sheet of paper. Frequency, mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney-U, and chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Research reporting was done according to �Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials� guidelines. Results: It was found that the patients who used respiratory exercise diary for three days used the spirometer statistically significantly more regular than the patients who did not (p<0.001). Conclusion: It is recommended to use respiratory exercise diaries together with spirometers in order to follow up respiratory exercises and to increase their effectiveness by providing regular use of the spirometer in the surgical clinics.

Investigation of Pediatric Nurses' Emotional Needs and Their Views on Spirituality and Spiritual Care

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate pediatric nurses' emotional needs and their views on spirituality and spiritual care. Material and Methods: The study sample consisted of 280 pediatric nurses working in Konya Province. Data were collected by Sociodemographic Information Form, Need For Affect Scale, and Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale. Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, percentile, multiple regression, and Pearson correlation. Results: Of the nurses, 80% was female, 58.2% was married, 61.7% had Bachelor's degree. Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale score average was 3.69�0.67 and Need For Affect Scale score average was 16.16�19.15. Considering Need For Affect Scale score averages, scores of nurses who have a positive approach towards emotional events (p<0.05), who consider children and families need spiritual care (p<0.05), who have >5 years of working experience (p<0.05), who are female (p<0.05) and who had a postgraduate degree (p<0.05) were significantly higher. There was a positive and moderately significant relationship between the nurses' scale scores. (p<0.05). Conclusion: It can be recommended that all pediatric nurses, especially single and male, childless and who are new to the profession, should be provided with the knowledge and skills to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of the children and their families.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation and Nursing Care

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation is an important treatment option for some health problems such as obesity, diabetes, metabolicsyndrome, parkinson's and multiplesclerosis, although some infections of the gastrointestinal tract are primarily. Fecal Microbiota Transplantation is the process of transferring the stool from healthy donor to the patient through the preparation stages. In donor selection, donor screening protocols are applied. Transplantation is performed by the lower, upper gastrointestinal tract and oral capsuleroute. Studies on the possible benefits of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation are stil ongoing. The aim of this review is to examine the practice of nursing care before, during and after fecal transplantation.

Social and Cultural Factors Affecting Premenstrual Syndrome Experience in Women

Premenstrual syndrome is a common health problem for women. Premenstrual syndrome is a clinical condition that occurs during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, and which spontaneously diminishes a few days after the onset of menstruation, including some physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms. Psychobehavioral and social factors play a role in the development of premenstrual syndrome as well as physiological factors related to interactions between gonodal steroid hormone and central nervous system neurotransmitters. Besides, significant changes in the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome in studies conducted in different countries of the world are explained by the fact that premenstrual syndrome is affected by some social and cultural characteristics of societies. This review is prepared for intention to debate current information on social and cultural factors affecting the premenstrual syndrome in women. These factors affecting premenstrual syndrome are covered under three headings: the effect of gender roles and attitudes, relationship structure in different sexual orientations and violence on women's premenstrual syndrome experiences. It is thought that this review will contribute to know the nurses that the relevant social and cultural factors are effective in the development of premenstrual syndrome, and to the planning of interventions to reduce or eliminate symptoms by evaluating patients in terms of these risk factors.
