The Efficacy of Self-Esteem Promotion Program on the Adolescents Migrated From East and Southeastern Anatolia Regions

Aim: This study was conducted as a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of selfesteem promotion program that developed by using Sister Callista Roy�s adaptation model to increase adaptation of immigrant and nonimmigrant adolescents on their self-esteem levels. Material and Methods: Adolescents, aged between 13 to 14, who migrated to Kayseri in 5-8 years and live in Kayseri were included in the study. Four groups including two intervention and two control groups were formed. The groups consisted of total 40 immigrant and nonimmigrant adolescents. The self-esteem promotion program was applied separately to two intervention groups. No intervention was applied to the control groups. The sociodemographic characteristics of the groups and the factors affecting their self-esteem were determined through a questionnaire. Self-esteem levels were determined by using �High School Students� Self-Esteem Inventory� by pre-test, post-test and follow-up measurements. Results: After self-esteem promotion program, it was found that the mean score of selfesteem was statistically higher in the intervention groups than control groups. There was no significant difference between the mean score of immigrant and nonimmigrant intervention groups. Conclusion: It is concluded that socio-economic and cultural environment could affect the adaptation of people as much as migration. However, it was found that the self-esteem promotion program had an effect on self-esteem of both immigrant and nonimmigrant adolescents in the intervention groups who share the same environment according to their own pre and post-test mean scores and control groups positively and similarly.

Validity and Reliability of Turkish Version of the Dyspnea-12 Scale

Aim: The aim of this study was to perform validity and reliability of Turkish version of the Dyspnea-12 Scale. Material and Methods: This methodological study was conducted with 60 COPD patients followed in a university hospital located in Ankara. �Patient Information Form� and �The Dyspnea-12 Scale� were used for data collection. The language, content and structure validity and the reliability stages were completed, respectively. Results: The mean age of the patients was 63.5�8.7 years, and the mean duration of COPD was 5.9�4.9 years. The big majority of the sample was composed of male (70.0%) and married (81.7%) patients. There was a consistency between the expert views on the items of the scale in the content variability analysis (CVR=1.00). As a result of exploratory factor analysis, the scale included two factor structures explaining 84.14% of the total variance, and the factor loadings ranged from 0.80 to 0.95. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, Chi-square/ df was 1.936, non-normed fit index was 0.89, and comparative fit index was 0.94. The internal consistency of the Cronbach�s alpha was 0.97. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Dyspnea-12 Scale met validity and reliability criteria at an acceptable level, is an appropriate tool to assess of dyspnea in a subjective manner and can be applied in clinical trials.

Evaluation of Postgraduate Theses In the Field of Occupational Health Nursing in Turkey Between 2009-2016

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate some characteristics of the postgraduate theses conducted in the field of occupational health nursing between 2009-2016 in Turkey. Material and Methods: Search terms included �occupational health�, �employee health� and �nursing� were used separately and together on the database of the National Council of Higher Education Thesis Center. The Thesis Evaluation Form was developed by the researchers. Results: As a result of the search, 15 theses were reached and it was found that 86.7% of them were master thesis. It was also determined that 53.8% of the thesis were conducted in the public health nursing field, mostly in Marmara University (23.0%) and in the year of 2009 (30.7%). 73.2% of the theses used descriptive research techniques. Questionnaires, scales and OMAHA Classification System were used in these theses as data collection tools. Conclusion: It was determined that the majority of theses were master thesis and used descriptive research type. There was a decrease in the number of thesis conducted in the field of occupational health according to years and the majority of studies were not published yet.

Risk of Falling and its Affecting Factors Among Emergency Room Patients

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the risk of falling and its affecting factors among emergency room (ER) patients. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 1000 patients who presented at ER. The data was collected by using a questionnaire and the KINDER 1 Fall Assessment Tool designed for ER patients. The data were analyzed by using number, percentage and chisquare test. Results: It was found that 24.5% of the participants were over 65 years old, 49.1% were male and 55.9% had chronic disease. 65.3% of the participants were found to have a high risk of falling. A statistically significant difference between the risk of falling and age, gender, having chronic illness, visual/hearing problem, history of falling, continuous drug use, state of consciousness was found. Conclusion: It was found that patients who presented at ER had a high risk of falling. According to the study results, it could be advised to assess the falling risk of ER patients with assessment tools specific to ER.

The Knowledge and Experiences of Fourth-Year Undergraduate Nursing Students on Breastfeeding During Their Education

Aim: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge and practices of fourth-year undergraduate students studying at four nursing schools on breastfeeding. Material and Methods: The population of this descriptive study consisted of 261 students studying at four nursing schools. A total of 90.8% of the eligible population was reached. The data were collected via face-to-face interview method through a questionnaire developed by researchers. Results: The mean knowledge score of the students was 38.8�3.5 (total 50 points). The mean scores on the sub-dimensions were as follows: 9.8�2.1 in the content of breast milk and breastfeeding, 9.2�2.7 in the effective breastfeeding behavior, 4.4�0.9 in the benefits of breast milk, 6.0�1.1 in the physiology of lactation, and 4.2�1.3 in breast care. Whereas 97.5% of the students had provided lactation consultation at least once during their education, 72.2% of them had provided breast care. The students found the consultation and breast care they had provided sufficient by 97% and 96.5% respectively. It was found that there was a significant difference between groups in terms of mean knowledge scores according to the education model of the school and the number of consultancy (p<0.05). Conclusions: The study findings show that the schools in which the study was conducted have a curriculum that ensures a commendable theoretical and practical educational process for breastfeeding.

The Effect of Bacterial Vaginosis on Preterm Labor

Approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely each year and about 1 million children die because of complications resulting from preterm labor. There are a great number of risk factors that are thought to play a role in the development of preterm labor. While genetic factors are among the unmodifiable risk factors; gestational age, infections, multiple pregnancy, stress, nutritional imbalance and smoking are among the modifiable risk factors. Among one of the infections in modifiable risk factors is bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a common condition seen among women and are usually asymptomatic. For this reason, diagnosis and treatment are delayed in women who do not have regular pelvic examinations. Women who are polygamous, smokers, practice vaginal douching and black are at risk for bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis can also be seen during pregnancy because it is a common infection in women of reproductive age. It has been determined that bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy causes an increased risk of developing preterm labor. Therefore, nurses play a crucial role in identifying and following up risky pregnancies in terms of bacterial vaginosis, referral to care if necessary, providing education and consultancy on vaginal infections and ways of prevention, and thus prevent preterm labor.

Professional Competency in Nursing

Competency is the knowledge, skills, ability and behaviors or capacities that a person possesses in order to perform tasks correctly and skillfully. Competency is an important criterion for nurses. There is no consensus on common definition of competency in nursing because of its multidimensional nature. Scientific innovations and technological developments require nurses to adapt to these conditions, to serve increasingly demanding patient groups, to work together with different disciplines, and to coordinate many services. Today, while the necessity of adaptation of nurses to the changing structure of healthcare services brings the concept of competency to the agenda, it is emphasized that developing competency is not easy. It is stated that knowing the qualifications determining the competency and the variables affecting it, building a competency development program based on the cooperation of the school and hospital administrations including the nurses starting from undergraduate education can contribute to developing competence. In this article, it is aimed to contribute to meeting the needs of managers and nurses about the subject by examining the literature about developing competency in nursing.

Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets and Nursing Care

Rickets is the most common metabolic bone disease seen in children all over the world. Rickets, characterized by deformity and insufficient growth of the bones, have long-term effects on bone health. The prevalence of the disease has been significantly reduced in many countries by programs such as vitamin D supplementation, enrichment of foods with vitamin D and awareness of the importance of sunlight in vitamin D synthesis. However, despite all efforts, rickets is an important public health problem that continues to be seen, especially among children aged 0 to 6 years. Neonatal D vitamin deficiency, which especially is seen because of maternal vitamin D deficiency, can cause severe hypocalcemic convulsions leading to neurological problems in the child. Rickets is a childhood illness that can be prevented and treated. The bone deformities due to the disease can be corrected by treatment in growing and developing children. It is important for nurses to identify at-risk mothers and children early on to reduce disease burden. Therefore, this article focuses on the signs and symptoms of rickets in children due to deficiency of vitamin D, children at risk and the responsibilities of the nurses in the prevention and treatment.
