Nursing Students' Anxiety And Stress Levels And Contributed Factors Before-During And After First Clinical Placement

Aim: This study was carried out to determine the clinical stress and state-trait anxiety levels and contributed factors of first grade nursing students before, during and after the first clinical placements . Method: This descriptive study was carried out between February -May 2012 with 94 first-year nursing students in the Nursing Department of the Health Sciences Faculty of an university. Data was collected with “Information Form”, the “State-Trait Anxiety Inventory”, and the “Clinical Stress Questionnaire”. Data was evaluated via number-percentage distributions, Friedman Variance, t-test/Mann-Whitney-U, Variance/Kruskal Wallis, and Pearson/ Spearman Correlation analyses. Results: Student nurses' state-trial anxiety and clinical stress levels before, during, and after the first clinical placement was found medium. It was also found that students' anxiety and stress levels decreased once their clinical expertise increased (p<0.05). There was statistically significant difference between anxiety and stress levels and students' willingness to choose their department, liking nursing profession, and their intent to work as a nurse after graduation(p<0.05). Conclusion: According to results of the study students' trial anxiety and stress levels were found decreased with clinical experince, while state anxiety levels found to be increased after first clinical replacement. It is also found that some sociodemographic characteristics of students who had medium level state-trial anxiety and clinical stress affected their anxiety and stress level.

Leanness Frequency and Correlation Wiith Breastfeeding Among Women Abstrac

Ojectives: This research was conducted to determine leanness frequency and correlation with breastfeeding among women. Material and methods: The research was conducted as descriptive and cross-sectional, study between February and July 2010 at vaccination outpatient. 327 women were participated in the study. Data was collected by Participant Information Form. Student's t-test, c� and Fisher's Exact test were used for data analysis. Results: The prevalence of leanness among women was found as 15.9 %. Lean women' Postpartum breastfeeding rate (84.6 %) was found lower than women' who are not underweight (95.7 %) (p<0.05). It was found that women with normal range BMI (87.5 %) breastfeeding their babies longer time than lean women (60 %) and lean women (84.6 %) more preferring to feed their babies with mixed foods compared to women with normal BMI (52 %) (p<0.05). It was also determined that low BMI women tend to start supplementary food earlier than women with normal range BMI for their babies. (p<0.05). Conclusions: These findings reveal that leanness effects breastfeeding negatively that lean women need more health care services during breastfeeding.

Nursing Students` Views and Experiences of Violence

Objective: Study was conducted to determine the nursing students` experiences of violence and views about violence. Method: This descriptive study was conducted with third-year 110 nursing students enrolled in 2012-2013 academic year. A questionnaire form developed by the researcher, was used for data collection. Results: Of the participants 18.4% of female students and 17.4% of male students reported an exposure to physical violence. While female students were generally exposed to violence from their fathers and brothers, male students were exposed to violence from their peers and other people. 25.3% female, 21.7% male students claimed that they exposed to emotional violence. While no sexual violence was determined among male students, 2.3% of female students stated that they were exposed to molestation. Conclusion: Young adults were exposed to domestic violence, accompanied violence from friends. Studies are needed to raise the awareness and improve knowledge about violence prevention, legal processes and their rights.

Nursing Students' Self Evaluation of Problem Solving Skills and Related Factors

Objective: This descriptive research was conducted to determine nursing students' problem solving skills and related factors. Methods: Sample was consisted of 160 nursing students studying at a state university in 2009- 2010 academic year. Data was collected with “Personal Information Form” and “Problem- Solving Inventory” developed by Heppner and Petersen and adapted to Turkish by �ahin and Sava��r. Data was analyzed with percentage, mean, significance test of difference between two means and one-way analysis of variance. Results: Students' problem-solving inventory mean score was 95.46�19.44, personal control subscale mean score was 16.81 � 3:59, reliance subscale mean score was 30.04 � 08:46, convergence/avoidance subscale mean score was 48.62 � 11:52. Conclusion: Nursing students' problem solving skill level was found as moderate. Gender, grade, graduated school, the place which they stay and perception of parental behavior do not have effect on problem solving skills. Problem-solving training may be offered to the students.

An Electroanalgesia Method: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and Nurses` Role

For effective pain management, pain guidelines and studies recommend the use of nonpharmacological methods combined with analgesics. One of these methods is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). Even though TENS has been extensively used in postoperative pain control, its' effects are still controversial. Some studies indicate that TENS is ineffective in severe pain control, whereas, some indicate as it is effective and reduces analgesics use. Nurses have responsibilities in providing most effective analgesia with least side effect. Nurses' roles and responsibilities in TENS, which is a complementary treatment method, believed to strengthen their autonomy as a profession. Based on our observations, hospitals in Turkey don't have TENS protocol and nurses don't administer TENS, whereas nursing regulation states and lists TENS administarion as one of a nursing intervention. As pain management requires teamwork, nurses should take the key role in pain management and use this nonpharmacological pain control method.

Caregiver Burden in Primary Caregivers of Patients Undergone Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Nursing Care

The treatment process of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation effect primary caregivers, as well as patients. The fact that caregivers leave their social environment, have difficulty in fulfilling their previous responsibilities and have financial issues combined with intensity of patients' symptoms may lead to caregiver burden. Nurses have a key role for determining and relieving caregiver burden in terms of time spent with patients and their families. This review was written to point out caregiver burden in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation period and nursing interventions to decrease burden.

Current Approaches to Oral Mucositis Prevention and Treatment In Patients Receiving Chemotherapy: Evidence-Based Practices

Chemotherapy used in cancer treatment disrupts primary mucosal barriers by also suppressing the growth and differentiation of the rapidly dividing epithelial cells of the mucosa while preventing the proliferation and progress of cancerous cells. Oral mucositis, characterized with mucosal barrier disruption, erythema, edema, bleeding and ulceration, leads to hoarseness, difficulty in speech, chewing and swallowing. While these adverse effects of mucositis negatively affect the patients' nutrition, they also cause reduction or skip of treatment dose. In spite of many studies focusing on oral mucositis, there is no standard prevention or treatment practice for it. This review paper was prepared with the objective of informing our colleagues on current practices in mouth hygiene which is an important element of nursing care, and current practices on oral mucositis prevention and treatment in patients receiving chemotherapy.
