Perceptions of Organizational Climate in Their Institution by Nurse Managers and Nurses Working in an University Hospital

Objective: This study was carried out descriptively to determine perceptions of organizational climate of manager nurses and nurses. Methods: It was used information form including introductory characteristics and Organizational Climate Descriptive Questionnaire (OCDQ) as tool of collecting data in the study wh�ch included 107 manager nurses and 500 nurses total 607 persons. Results: In the result of evaluation Organizational Climate approach average points of manager nurses and nurses were established a score of (2.32�0.24) and (2.29�0.23) respectively, which was determined as medicare. It was determined that frustration (2.36�0.40) and overlooking (2.42�0.36) points of nurses were higher than those of nurse managers and moral (2.39�0.46) and closely control (2.61�0.47) and indulgence (2.62�0.55) points of nurse managers were higher than those of nurses, with a highly significant statistical significance.It was determined a relationship between perceptions of organizational climate of manager nurses and nurses and years of age, educational situation and experience time with a significant statistical significance. Conclusion: Consequently, it is necessary that it must be created an organizational environment in which manager nurses and nurses feel themselves happy and safe.

Women's Menopausal Sypmtoms and Factors Affecting it During Climacteric Period

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the factors that affect severity of women menopausal complaints in climacteric period. Methods: The cross sectional and descriptive study was conducted on women that have applied to Atat�rk University Aziziye Research Hospital Menopause Policlinic. The research was carried out with 263 women chosen with simple random sampling method. “Survey Form” and “Menopause Rating Scale (MRS)” was used in gathering data. Results: MRS somatic complaints point average was determined to be 4.19�2.08, psychological complaints point average was 13.12�4.59 and urogenital complaints point average was found to be 5.35�3.09. MRS point average was determined to be 22.67�8.06. Difference among women's MRS total point average according to marriage age, making decisions in family, total birth number, how they go through menopause, how they perceive menopause was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that all of the women in the research went through menopause symptoms on “medium” or “close to medium” severity level. It was determined that women who were over the age of 20 and who took part in decision making process in her family experienced menopausal symptoms less while women who had 6 or more births, who entered menopause with surgical method, and who perceived menopause as “feeling of getting old”, “decrease of sexuality/end of sexuality” experiences more menopause symptoms.

Community Mental Health Nursing: Sample of Student Practice

Objectives: This study aims to present a sample community mental health nursing practice done with students of nursing Instrument and Method: Community mental health nursing practice is a 10-week practice where students make a shift with clinical psychiatry nursing area. The students kept the records related to 95 family in a folder. The records formed by the students were analyzed as well as the number of families/individuals accessed, nursing diagnoses they made with regard to the families, topics of the planned interview made with families and trainings. Findings: Students were determineted as the nursing diagnoses majority cognitive-perceptual field (58), coping-stress tolerance (37), role relationships (22). The topics of students' interview with the family and health training topics were determineted as coping strategies, communication skills, the present disorders and protection, developmental features and parental attitudes and promoting positive health behaviors and preventing disorders . Conclusion: According to family records, students made the majority of the nursing diagnoses in the areas of cognitive spatial area and coping, stress tolerance. They mainly used coping skills as an interview topic and the disorders in the family and protection issues as training topics.

Identification the Level of Tendency in Malpractice Among Nurses

Objective: This study aims to determine the level the factors that affect medical error proneness among nurses. Method: Sample of the descriptive and analytic study was composed of 161 voluntary nurses employed in a public hospital in May-August 2010 “Malpractice Trend Scale in Nursing” developed by �zata and Altunkan (2010) and “Nurse Identification Form” were used as data collection tools in the study. Descriptive data of the study was analyzed for percentages and averages and Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were utilized in data analysis. Results: Mean score for the scale was found to be 230.68�10.78 (between 49-245) and total scores for sub scales “Medicine and Transfusion Practices”, “Hospital Infections”, “Patient Monitoring and Material Safety”, “Falls” and “Communication” were determined to be 86.56�3.54, 57.67� 2.79, 39.98� 3.91, 23.22�2.04 and 23.00�2.17 respectively. A statistically significant difference was detected between medical error proneness and clinic of employment and years of employment (p<0.05) however no meaningful difference was determined for educational status factor (p>0.05). Conclusion: Study shows that medical error proneness among nurses is low however identified that nurses with less experience and nurses who work in surgical units are more prone to make medical errors.

Quality of Life and Related Factors of Older People in Nursing Home

Objective: The research is carried out as a descriptive study to determine the quality of life and related factors of older people who live in nursing homes. Method: The population of research was consisted of 402 older people who live in public Nursing Homes within the provincial borders of Ankara. The sample of survey was consisted of 186 older people who 65 years old and upper, nondemented and not hearing impairment. Data for the research was collected by questionaire form developed to determine the descriptive characterisitics of the older people and characterisitics of nursing home and the quality of life was evaluated by using World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Older Adults Module (WHOQOL-OLD). Data analysis was performed using SPSS 11.5 software. Data analysis were done One Way Anova and t test. Findings: According to the research, 52.2% of participants are among 75-84 years, 69.9% were widower, %47.2 had least two chronic illness, 33.4% were illiterate, 12.5% didn't have social insurance. The mean values of the domain scores of the WHOQOL-OLD were as follows: “Sensory-Abilities” 15.82�3.73; “Autonomy” 12.49�2.86; “Past-Present-and-Future-Activities” 11.80 � 3.3; “Social-Participation” 12.35�3.22; “Death-and-Dying” 11.63�3.49 and “Intimacy” 11.80 � 3.2. The mean values for the total module score were 76.11�16.8. Conclusion: Socioeconomic status, lesiure time activities, participate the activities of nursing home, relationship with family, residents and employee were found correlated with different subscales of WHOQOL-OLD.

Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia and Quality of Life

Objective: This study aims were to measure the effects of chemotherapy induced alopecia to the patients' quality of life and to determine the factors which effects quality of life. Methods: This study was cross-sectional and descriptive. 182 patients admitted to the oncology service and chemotherapy units were included in the study.Data were collected with informations form and Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia Quality of Life Scale (KBAYKO). Results: It was observed that the men's scores of positive inwardness reflection dimension inventory were higher than women's scores of the same inventory; the scores of positive thinking dimension inventory of the working participants were higher than not-working participants scores of the same inventory. It was determined that ever the severity of alopecia was increasing; the scores of the inventory were more decreasing. The scores of third dimension has been found more lower by the participant who has secondary illness and the scores of common and primer dimensions of the inventory has been found lower by the participant who evaluated their health status not good. Conclusion: It was determined that the quality of life scores show discrepancies according to the gender, employment status, the the severity of alopecia, additional disease, and general health perception.

A Teaching Strategy in Nursing: Using Concept Mapping

In nursing, there has been steadily increased in some practices such as standardization and accreditation of patient care and using the systematic of simulation with the aim of transferring theoretical knowledge into practical abilities of the students and to be evidence-based of clinic practices in nursing. Each of these studies could improve the nursing students' learning skills, in this way increase students' critical thinking and decision-making abilities (ICN, 2009). The purpose of education is to provide the students' meaningful and solidifying learning instead of rote learning, drawing a roadmap for restructuring in students' understanding, reading of complex issues. For this purpose, concept maps is one of the important teaching strategies which is help for the students' in accurately to getting knowledge which is essantial for them. In this article, it was investigated concept mapping strategy which is contribute to the development of the ability to synthesis, organization and materialize of knowledge in nursing education.

The Management of Delirium in Intensive Care Patients and the Responsibilities of Nurses

Delirium occurring in high prevalence in the intensive care units, increases predisposition of neuro-psychiatric disorders, mortality, morbidity, length of hospital stay and mechanical ventilation duration. Nurse should organize the practice according to the type of delirium while caring process. The patients with hypoactive delirium are at the risks of complications related to long term mechanical ventilation and aspiration, nosocomial pneumonia, pressure ulcers, and venous thromboembolism. However, care interruption and rejection due to disordered thought process, fear, and destructive behaviors occur in hyperactive delirium. Nurse need to handle environmental factors that contribute to development of delirium along with risk factors of the patients. Noise, confusing stimulations, social isolation must be precluded; day light should be supported for the patients in the intensive care units. A clear communication should be ensured for the patient, person-place-time orientation should be provided, circadian rhythm should be sustained with proper environment for sleeping and pain should get under control with analgesics. In addition, it is suggested that unnecessary invasive interventions should get under control in intensive care units for preventing delirium. The management of delirium and nursing practice for delirium in intensive care units were discussed in this article.

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia and Nursing Care

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most important hospital –acquired infection in intensive care unit. Risk factors for the development of VAP can be classified as preventable or unpreventable risk factors. Unpreventable risk factors include patientrelated risk factors such as age, gender, co-morbidite, or treatment-related risk factors which developed secondary to a surgical operation. Preventable risk factors include supine positioning, enteral nutrition, inadequate subglottic aspiration, stres ulcer prophylaxis, cuff pressure <20 cmH₂ O, nasal entubation, poor compliance of hand hygiene, and tracheostomy. To reduce the development of VAP in patients with mechanical ventilation is likely with the application of proper infection control measures and the elimination of preventable risk factors. Intensive care nurses play an important role in the elimination of preventable risk factors. This article is written for the purpose of increasing the knowledge level of our colleagues about VAP and its nursing care.
