The Knowledge of Student Nurses on Some Non-Pharmacological Methods Used in the Pain Control

This descriptive study was carried out to determine the knowledge of student nurses on some non-pharmacological methods used in the pain control. The sample included 260 students who were enrolled to basic professional courses of nursing during the autumn term of the 2003-2004 academic year in the Hacettepe University School of Nursing. 244 volunteered students attended to this study. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire prepared by the researcher. The mean score of students regarding with the knowledge on non-pharmacological methods used in pain control was 29.26 out of the total score of 57.50. The statistical analysis on a number of independent variables revealed that only the mean score of students who had experienced pain was significant (p<0.05). It was identified that students' knowledge on the effects of massage, hold-cold application and relaxation exercises, were higher whereas their knowledge were low on the dermal menthol application, distraction, music and imagination.
