Effect of An Education Programme on the Lifestyle Change and Compliance to Drug Therapy of Hypertensive Patients

This study was conducted as quasi-experimental to determine the effect of an education program on the lifestyle changes and compliance to drug therapy of patients with hypertension diagnosis. 45 patients were recruited to this study who applied to hypertension, obesity and diabetes center of Mugla State Hospital in between October 2005 and December 2005. Mean age of patients was 51.0 ± 9.9 year, and 53.3 % graduated from primary school, 64.4 % female and 84.4 % was married. Following the education program the rate of patients who practice exercises and adjust to diet therapy has increased whereas the number of smokers has not changed. There was a significant decrease on daily consumption of foods ( except meat group) which are rich in saturated fat and cholesterol, but, there was an important increase on the consumption of legumes, fruits and vegetables. After a six month follow-up period all of the patients used their drugs according to the prescribed dose and frequency.
