Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of using respiratory exercise diary on regular spirometer use in the postoperative period.

Material and Methods: The study was carried out in a randomized controlled design between May 2017 and October 2018 in a general surgery unit of a university hospital. The study sample consisted of 80 patients who underwent open abdominal surgery under general anesthesia (study group=44, control group=36). Data were collected using “individual identification form” and “respiratory exercise diary”. Patients in both groups were visited by the researcher in their room before surgery and informed about respiratory exercises with spirometer. The patients in the study group were asked to note their exercises on respiratory exercise diary for three days, and the patients in the control group on a blank sheet of paper. Frequency, mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney-U, and chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Research reporting was done according to “Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials” guidelines.

Results: It was found that the patients who used respiratory exercise diary for three days used the spirometer statistically significantly more regular than the patients who did not (p<0.001).

Conclusion: It is recommended to use respiratory exercise diaries together with spirometers in order to follow up respiratory exercises and to increase their effectiveness by providing regular use of the spirometer in the surgical clinics.
