Health literacy is nowadays considered to be a vital determinant of health promotion. Today, health literacy has acquired greater importance as a result of the increase in access to information, elongation of human life, increased incidences of chronic disease and the search for changes in the healthcare services provided for chronic disorders. Individuals today are expected to have sufficient knowledge, awareness and ability to develop correct attitudes and behaviors about health, to better understand health workers, to take an active role in participation in health decisions and to benefit from higher quality health services. Therefore, it is important to determine the health literacy level of individuals, as this can play a key role for nurses in fulfilling the health education and counseling roles. The emergence of complex societies in the world, the continuous exposure of people to both accurate and inaccurate health information and encountering complex health and education systems make it difficult to determine the level of health literacy. Health literacy should be evaluated with reliable and valid measurement tools considering the cultural and social dimensions of individuals and measures should be taken according to the results and trainings should be planned. This review investigates the tools used in the measurement of health literacy levels in Turkey and the World, as well as their purposes and validity and reliability.
